Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Today marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year which lasts until 15 February 2017.

The only real sign of this that we have seen are the paper lanterns on Multrees Walk, but we have listed some events that we have discovered.

This is the tenth sign in the Chinese Zodiac. Chinese signs last for a year rather than just a month and each year takes its time to come around in the twelve year system.

Lucky numbers for roosters : 5, 7 and 8

Something to avoid today – don’t eat porridge for breakfast as it is a sign of being poor…

This is the year of the rooster, and anyone born under this sign might have these characteristics :

  • Rooster: Honest, energetic, intelligent, flamboyant, flexible, diverse,  confident.

You are promised the biggest Chinese New Year Celebration Party at The Cav 3 West Tollcross tonight Saturday 28 January 2017 from 23:00. More details here.

At The Three Sisters on the Cowgate they will have a Chinese street food Pop-up in their yard tomorrow Sunday 29 January 2017 from 12 noon.

And if you fancy making your own Chinese food then there are several Chinese supermarkets in Edinburgh with PCY Oriental at 199-201 Leith Walk, Hua Xing Chinese Supermarket at 48 Ratcliffe Terrace and the Aihua Supermarket at 36 West Crosscauseway. You will find everything you need to make your own dumplings at home. But at Matthews Foods at 36 Inglis Green Road they not only sell you the ingredients but there is a restaurant on site. The Imperial Palace specialises in Cantonese and Szechuan cooking.

One of our favourite Chinese restaurants is still the Kweilin on Dundas Street but closely followed by the little tiny restaurant on the corner of Canon Street called The Jade Garden which is principally a takeway but has some seats – add your restaurant tips below!
