Elite League: Dundee Stars 2, Edinburgh Capitals 3 (after penalty shots).

RED-HOT Russian Pavel Vorobyev has been inspirational for bottom club Edinburgh Capitals so far this season.

And the 34-yar-old, former Chicago Blackhawks right-wing, kept his cool to steer the Murrayfield side to a much-needed road victory at basement rivals Dundee Stars last night.

The visitors twice had to come from behind but Kazakhstan-born Vorobyev, who scored in normal time, stamped his mark on this huge game for both clubs as they battle for a coveted play-off place.

Justin Faryna fired Dundee ahead after build-up play involving Vinny Scarsella and Felix-Antoine Poulin after only six minutes.

But Capitals hit back three minutes later on the power play when Pavel Vorobyev netted, player/coach Michal Dobron and Matt Tipoff assisting.

The scoreline remained the same until the 35th minute when Scarsella edted the home side ahead for a second time.

The power play goal came after work from Kevin Bruijsten and Faryna but the lead did not last long.

Garrett Milan countered 42 seconds from the end of the middle session after being set up by Jacob Johnston and Jared Staal leaving the sides level at 2-2 going into the final period.

The sides could not be separated after the end of regular time and the tense clash moved into sudden death overtime.

And Travis Fullerton proved his class by saving a penalty shot from Faryna with 46 seconds left in the extra session.

The game moved into penalty shots. Mikael Lidhammar, Scarsella and Joey Sides all failed for Dundee.

Tipoff and Jacob Johnston failed for Capitals but up stepped Vorobyev to net the game-winner for the Edinburgh side.
