Edinburgh’s Christmas – Winter Windows

The schools competition to design a winter window has until now been hidden away in Princes Street Gardens. Now there is a proper display of the children’s work across Edinburgh in West Parliament Square, Kirkgate Plaza in Leith, Craigmillar Library, Drumbrae Library and Westside Plaza Wester Hailes.

The pupils work on their designs during the autumn term to make stained glass windows which look forward to 2050 and what they think Edinburgh might look like. This highlights 2050 Edinburgh City Vision which is a project engaging all residents in looking forward and imagining the city in the future. The competition is run in association with National Galleries of Scotland and support from Western Toyota.

All 44 winners received their awards at a special reception at the National Galleries of Scotland on Friday, 24 November and now you can see all the winning designs on display across the city.

A number of special commendations were awarded, including Katie from Braidburn School who won the Lord Provost Commendation; Nisrine from Granton Primary School who won the Arts & Creative Learning, City of Edinburgh Council Commendation; Hannah from Hermitage Park Primary School who won the Underbelly Commendation, Amie from Gracemount High School who won the Toyota Commendation; Gabriel from St Peter’s Primary School who won St Giles Commendation and Dexter from Corstorphine Primary School who won the National Galleries of Scotland Commendation.

Edinburgh’s Lord Provost, Frank Ross, said: “Peering into the future, these festive displays consider what Edinburgh could look like in 2050. They will spread Edinburgh’s Christmas cheer to all corners of the city, and hopefully inspire communities to share their own visions for Edinburgh as part of the 2050 City Vision Project. Well done to all of the talented and imaginative school pupils involved.”
