ScottishPower is set to demonstrate its commitment to nurturing the UK’s future energy leaders by funding 16 new Masters Scholarships in energy-related disciplines in 2018.

The energy supplier is calling on UK final year undergraduates looking to progress their careers in the energy, digital and environmental industries to apply for the 2018/19 scholarships programme which opens this week.

The programme, which is now in its seventh year, has supported students at the country’s most esteemed universities, including Cambridge University, Imperial College London, Edinburgh University, Glasgow University, Strathclyde University, Liverpool University and East Anglia University.

The same line up of universities will work in partnership with the energy supplier again for this year’s student intake.

Sixteen scholars will receive full course fee funding for their Masters’ studies as well as a generous living allowance. This year for the first time ScottishPower has also pledged to work with successful scholars to help them into the workplace after their studies, establishing a new generation of forward-thinking leaders at the heart of the company.

Applications open today and will close on 2 April 2018 at 1pm. Full information on the scholarship programme can be found here.

Students from a range of disciplines will be considered for the sought-after positions, including those looking to study engineering, renewable and sustainable energy systems. With the increased demand for new technology roles, the programme also began incorporating degrees such as computer science, cybersecurity and big data from last year.

Hamish Watson, HR Director at ScottishPower: “There is no doubt that the future of the energy industry lies in the hands of our bright young people and ScottishPower is committed to supporting the advancement of their education. We’re delighted to be offering these scholarships opportunities this year; it presents a huge opportunity for graduates to develop their skills and knowledge, and to demonstrate how they can contribute to our future.”

Previous alumni of the ScottishPower Scholarships programme have achieved great success, working in groundbreaking energy-related fields, including former student Lloyd Keogh who now works within SMART Technologies.

Lloyd Keogh said: “From day one of the scholarship, there are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of. This included networking with senior members of the business, site visits which provide a learning experience that cannot be replicated in lectures and assistance with my final year project. However, the biggest benefit was securing my position on the ScottishPower Graduate Scheme through the scholarship. The company have been excellent in supporting and developing me for a career in an industry that is constantly changing. You are a valued member of the team right from the offset and I have already been given challenging and exciting projects to work on. For anyone wanting to work in the energy sector, being on the scholarship is the perfect opportunity to achieve this.”
