A six-month multi millionpound project to upgrade an electricity substation which plays a vital part in Central Scotland’s transmission network has begun.

Ageing equipment within the Shrubhill substation at Dryden Gait, which was originally installed in the 1960s, will be replaced with new technology and includes the installation of a new 275 kV transformer.

The upgraded substation will ensure SP Energy Networks, the owner and maintainer of
the electricity network in Central and Southern Scotland, can provide a safe and reliable supply which customers in the North Edinburgh area will feed off.

As maintainer of the district’s power supply, replacing old equipment and keeping up with technology advances, to ensure that the transmission infrastructure is reliable and performing efficiently is one of SP Energy Networks’ prime objectives.

The majority of the work will be carried out within the confines of the substation itself, with every effort taken to minimise the effect on the surrounding community. Work is scheduled for completion by the end of the year and as part of their community engagement activities, local residents were contacted by SP Energy Networks ahead of the project commencing and a community information evening was held.

Karen MacGregor, Community Relations Manager at SP Energy Networks, said: “The multi million pound replacement project that SP Energy Networks is undertaking in Edinburgh at Shrubhill Substation will ensure the transmission network can deliver a secure and reliable service today and in the future. The work will safeguard the network for years to come and ensure our ability to deliver clean energy through our vast transmission network.”

Community relations is a priority for SP Energy Networks and in addition to making local residents and groups aware of work in their area, its community relations team is active in the local community and involved in supporting local schools and events.
