The Staggs Bar Monarchs powered to second place in the Championship Fours in Redcar.

And the squad received praise for their performance from team manager and co-promoter John Campbell.

Peterborough Panthers retained the title but Monarchs, who have won the competition on four occasions, performed brilliantly minus their top rider in the averages, Ricky Wells.

He was in Poland competing but Campbell, who did not see this display coming, said: “It was absolutely astounding, really exceptional.

“Everybody had an exceptional race. Josh (Pickering) was the most exciting rider on view in the whole meeting.

“Erik (Riss) was magnificent and you can see now some real potential in some of our riders.”

Glasgow Tigers and Berwick Bandits did not make the final.
