Internationally Renowned Chinese Orchestra to Lead Music Workshop

An award winning orchestra from Tianjin University of Finance and Economics is helping to celebrate the Year of the Pig by leading workshops on traditional Chinese musical instruments.

The Rainbow Musical Society will host the session as part of a burgeoning relationship between the Eric Liddell Centre, a dementia care charity and community hub and the Scottish Confucius Institute for Business and Communication at Heriot-Watt University.

Participants will be given an interactive demonstration at the Centre of instruments such as the Zither, Bamboo Flute, Pipa and Suona horn before a performance from the orchestra themselves.

John MacMillan, Chief Executive of the Eric Liddell Centre said: “It’s fantastic that we’ve arranged this in collaboration with the Confucius Institute at Heriot-Watt. We’re really happy to continue our work with the local Chinese community in a joint celebration of culture.”

Prof Ian Baxter, the Director of the Confucius Institute at Heriot-Watt University said: “For years, the Eric Liddell Centre has been a close partner with Edinburgh’s Chinese community. It’s our great honour to develop a positive role in promoting the understanding of Chinese culture and building connections with Edinburgh charities like the ELC.”

The workshops will take place on Tuesday 19th February at the Eric Liddell Centre from 9am-10.30am and 11am-12.30pm. Admission is free with registration here.
