Over 100 penguins received their annual health check at Edinburgh Zoo yesterday.

Every year, a determined team of vets and keepers weighs and checks each individual gentoo, king and Northern rockhopper penguin at Penguins Rock to ensure they are in peak condition before their spring breeding season.

The Zoo has a long history with penguins as they were one of the first species to arrive before it opened in 1913. As well as being home to the world’s most famous penguin, Sir Nils Olav, Edinburgh Zoo has the largest outdoor penguin pool in Europe and was the first zoo in the Northern hemisphere to breed king penguins.
