The Staggs Bar Monarchs bring in former captain Matthew Wethers as a guest to replace crocked Josh Pickering when Glasgow Tigers visit in the last SGB Championship Shield match of the qualifying stages on Friday (tapes-up 7.30pm).

Tigers need a draw at least to qualify for the semi-finals but Monarchs can’t qualify but Mike Hunter, Monarchs’ spokesman, promised fans: “We will be trying as hard as we can to defeat our rivals.”

Hunter admitted that Monarchs had a bad night at Birmingham in midweek, not only losing by a dozen points but also seeing heat leader Pickering sidelined with a bad crash in the final race.

Wethers, nicknamed Stormy, has been in good form recently and includes a score of 13 on his current home track at Newcastle against Leicester Lions.

Glasgow have been impressive recently with away wins at Newcastle and Eastbourne as well as a draw in a KO Cup match at Sheffield.
