Hundreds of workers and residents were evacuated after a fire at an electrical substation near the Scottish Parliament

Explosions could be heard on Holyrood Road at 12.35pm yesterday afternoon and smoke could be seen for miles across the city.

The fire broke out around Hammermen’s Entry and Slater’s Steps.

Police closed Holyrood Road between Viewcraig Street and Dumbiedykes Road.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 12.35pm on Thursday to reports of a well-developed fire involving an electrical substation near Holyrood Road, Edinburgh.”
