The World Press Photo Exhibition, showcasing some of the most powerful images from around the globe, can be seen at the Scottish Parliament until Saturday 24 August 2019.

This is a collection of award-winning photo journalism and “issues-focussed” photography from 2018 covering the environment, sport, nature and general news.

Winning images were selected from over 78,000 entries submitted by 4,738 photographers based in 129 countries. These have been whittled down to 147 striking images and the exhibition, curated by Yi Wen Hsia from the World Press Photo Foundation, was officially opened by Christine Grahame MSP, Deputy Presiding Officer at The Scottish Parliament.

Among the images featured are striking moments in time caught by Marco Gualazzini, Brent Stirton, Terrell Groggins and Brendan Smialowski’s remarkable photograph of President Macron holding hands with President Trump.
Also poignant are Olivia Harris’s thought provoking images relating to the Irish Referendum on Abortion.
