The Scottish National Party (SNP) polled over 50,000 votes to win two constituencies in West Lothian.

Hannah Bardell retained her Livingston seat with 25,617 votes leaving Conservative candidate Damian Timson 13, 435 votes behind. He polled 12,182 votes.

And Martyn Day also gained another term in the Linlithgow and East Falkirk constituency. He collected 25,551 votes with Charles Kennedy (Conservative) second on 14,285 votes, a majority of 11,266.

Both candidates saw their majorities increase in areas which both polled at 66.5 per cent.

Ms Bardel, in her acceptance speech at around 4.00am in chilly West Lothian College, thanked her opponents and agreed that the campaign had engendered a fair debate on key issues.

Mr Day thanked the electorate for putting their faith and trust in him for a second term.

The swing to the SNP in the area mirrored the trend nationally as the party won 48 seats after securing 45 per cent of the vote, 8.1 per cent more than in the last General Election, when the party won 35 seats.
