Jamie Brodie (35) from Broomhouse is on TV this week as a contestant on Come Dine With Me.

This is the cookery programme where several people who think they are pretty good at cooking compete for a £1,000 cash prize.

He made my mouth water with his description of the dishes he cooked for his guests.

His love of the kitchen came from his Nana. He explained: “I’m pretty good at cooking which I got from my nana, Rose. She was my mum’s mum. I was very close to her, I always visited at least once a week. And I used to go to her house for my dinner every lunchtime when I was at school. I stayed with her every Friday night when she would make me a three course meal. I got my passion for cooking from her”

It would have been her birthday on 10 March, so it’s really fitting that the show is on TV this week. Jamie said she was a really good cook. His grandad used to say that he had no need to go to restaurants as he had the ‘best cook in Edinburgh’ at home. Every single day she would make a three course meal for him with a prawn cocktail starter.

Jamie and his Nana Rose Thomson who would have been 80 this week.

Jamie’s nana, Rose Thomson, lived in Murrayburn before moving to Colinton. Jamie said: “She died in November 2018, and I really wanted to go on the programme just for her. Now to hear that the programme is being aired this week when it would have been her 80th birthday it’s like a wee sign.”

Jamie’s menu included: Mussels in white wine sauce with pancetta, spring onion and mushroom served with his own white crusty bread and chicken liver paté as an alternative. Rack of lamb with rosemary and garlic red wine jus with broccoli stems, baby carrots and baby potatoes.

He said that he drizzled olive oil, along with some salt and pepper and thyme over the broccoli and carrots before roasting them in the oven. The potatoes were simple boiled and served with butter, parsley and salt. Finally, he made a chocolate torte with his own wee added touch. He blended dark chocolate digestives with some butter as a base and added strawberries on top for decoration.

Before the last course taxi driver Jamie offered his guests some cheeky entertainment. He gave them the experience of a silent disco along with an unexpected twist – he stripped off!

Apparently anyone who knows Jamie will know that this is his party piece and he does it to Christina Aguilera’s song Dirty. (Spoiler alert – he may have kept an essential piece of underwear on!)

It took five nights in a row to film the programme but of course Jamie is absolutely sworn to secrecy about who won. You will just have to watch to find out. It airs each evening at 5.30pm on Channel 4.
