The Capital’s sporting heroes will be honoured at a special awards ceremony being held at Broughton High School tomorrow night.
Silver medal-winning boxer Josh Taylor will join a number of his fellow athletes and medal-winners newly returned from the Commonwealth Games in Delhi for the event. Also attending are stars of local sports clubs and teams. The evening will feature guest speeches by Michael Cavanagh, Chair of Commonwealth Games Scotland and John Scott, Chief Executive of Commonwealth Games 2014.
As well as Josh, the other Commonwealth Games athletes attending include Michael Jamieson, who won Silver in the 200m breaststroke; Steven Simmons, Bronze medallist 91g Boxing; and Team Cycling Sprint Silver-medallists Jenny Davis and Charline Joiner.
The awards being presented on the night are: Volunteer of the Year Award, Coach of the Year Award, Club of the Year Award and Edinburgh Schools Sports Academy Athlete of the Year Award.
Councillor Deidre Brock, Culture and Leisure Convenor for the City of Edinburgh Council, will present the Volunteer of the Year Award after giving the opening address at the ceremony.
She said: “These Sports Awards are a tremendous opportunity for us to celebrate the
achievements of Edinburgh’s sports volunteers, coaches, clubs and athletes.
Each of these individuals is making an invaluable contribution towards our aim to
make Edinburgh the most physically active city in Europe by 2020.
“Their dedication and commitment helps inspire thousands of Edinburgh people
of all ages, to be active and join in with the many sporting activities and events
the city has to offer.”
This year’s recipient of the Sir Chris Hoy Trophy will also be announced, and presentations will be made to the Commonwealth Games athletes in attendance.
